What started out as an arm of British Nuclear Fuels back in 1995, Direct Rail Services has expanded to become one of the largest operators of both freight and passenger services in the United Kingdom, rivalling both of the mainstream established freight operators Freightliner and DB Schenker. Originally running the nuclear flask services that had been handed over from EWS, the operator now runs a wide variety of services, including intermodal and container services, measurement trains for Network Rail, RHTT services, ECS and coaching stock movements, hoppers and charter services, as well as being a major part of other operators, using their locomotives to rescue stranded Pendolino sets and so forth.

The operator initially started with a fleet of donated EWS locomotives, including redundant Class 20's, 37's, 33's and 47's. DRS later refurbished these locomotives in order to improve their reliability, giving these ageing locomotives of the 1960's a new lease of life. With the refurbishment of the more standard fleet of Class 37's and 20's, the Class 33's were pensioned off in 2001/2002, with some finding a new lease of life elsewhere. In 2003 the operator received its own fleet of Class 66/4's together with several redundant Class 57/0's that had formerly operated with Freightliner. Today DRS operates a mixed fleet of both heritage and modern locomotives, but have hoped to be able to pension off the older Class 20's and 37's with a new fleet of Class 68 locomotives designed after the European Vossloh locomotives.
