(3 Aug 2019) A negotiator for the Sudanese pro-democracy movement has given more details of the power-sharing agreement reached Saturday between protesters and the ruling military council.
The agreement establishes a joint civilian-military sovereign council that will rule Sudan for a little over three years while elections are organised.
The negotiator, Ebtisam Senhouri, said the pro-democracy movement would choose two thirds of the sovereign council, with the remaining third selected by political parties that were not part of former leader Omar al-Bashir's government.
Senhouri said the military would select the defence and interior ministers during the transition period.
The two sides had been divided over whether military leaders would be immune from prosecution over recent violence against protesters.
It was not immediately clear whether they had resolved that dispute.
The military overthrew al-Bashir in April following months of mass protests against his three-decade-long authoritarian rule.
