Jean-Michael Basquiat Biography
Many people think that Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 -1988), who was born in New York, was one of the most important artists of the 1980s and 1990s.

Basquiat tried out street art when he was a young adult. He was known as SAMO in the downtown art scene of New York City. In 1981, he was part of a groundbreaking show called "New York/New Wave" at MoMA's PS1 branch in Long Island City. During his short, high-profile career, the artist looked at issues like what it means to be black in America, the effects of colonization, and the effects of consumerism.
