CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The fireworks, the gatherings with friends and family, all things that people enjoy during the holiday weekend will be different this year because of the coronavirus and there’s a campaign set up to keep people safe.

The Regional COVID Communications Center launched the campaign. Regina Carswell Russo is the organization’s executive director.

“It’s really so exciting," said Russo. "We are launching it today because it’s the Fourth of July. Everybody’s going to go out, get their grill on, be with their family, be social. If you want to be social, masks on. It’s really that simple.”

The center is a collaboration between hospitals, doctors, the Cincinnati Regional Chamber of Commerce, and a multitude of other organizations.

“They’re wrapping their arms around messaging that can help their employees, their families, and citizens live, work, and play safely throughout the stages of this pandemic,” Russo said.

The main goal is to reinforce the idea of wearing masks. The #MasksOn campaign will be in PSAs and flood social media throughout the holiday weekend.

Dr. Andrew Beck is a pediatrician with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

“We have been seeing a spike. There are more people at hospitals now. There are more people in the ICU now and dying as a result of COVID-19,” Beck said.

Beck points out that other than washing our hands and social distancing, there are not a lot of ways to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus without using masks.

Beck said, “We all have to protect ourselves but we have to protect each other, too. This is only going to be controlled if we all work together.”

“If you’re going to be in a crowd, if you want to enjoy yourself this holiday weekend, and we all do, it’s simple. Masks on,” Russo said.
