In this video we cover the teaching of fetch or retrieve using handtarget as the basic skill foundation.

The very first thing I do with new dogs and puppies atnthe very beginning is to chart out wich segment is the strongest and weakest, meaning I just throw the ball a couple of times and check the natural behaviour of the dog:

*will the dog run towards the ball?
*will the dog hold the ball?

And most importantly, what will be the next move of the dog? Will the dog come willingly back or rocket off forgetting all about me.

Knowing this allows me to determine what segment of the retrieve/fetch exercise will need work. Regardless of this I will always teach and build a strong hold and release as my basics. I will also give the dog a reason to come back to me, another toy oppurtunity to get and play with. I want my training always smooth and making the dog do most of working load.

Skill you dog will already need to have an understanding of is:

*Hand Target/Nose Target
*Hold
*Release/Drop
