South Korean developer Pearl Abyss has confirmed that its upcoming single-player action-adventure Crimson Desert features an open world "at least twice as big as the playable area of Skyrim" and larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's map, studio PR director Will Powers said in interviews and at the New Game+ Showcase.
Set on the fantasy continent of Pywel and built on Pearl Abyss's BlackSpace Engine, the game supports diverse traversal — dragons, bears, mechs, grappling hooks and explorable "sky islands" — and emphasises interactivity and activities over traditional branching RPG decision mechanics.
Pearl Abyss says the world is designed to produce radically different playthroughs through quest variety; previews estimate a 50–80 hour main campaign.
Crimson Desert is rated M and is due for release on March 19, 2026.
Developers emphasised that map size alone does not guarantee quality, stressing world density and indirect player guidance to keep exploration engaging.
