In this video Doug shows us how to tune a cello using a chromatic digital tuner. He goes through tuning with the fine tuners and also how to tune using the pegs.

If you are a beginner, tuning with the fine tuners is the easiest way to tune your cello, however if your cello is really out of tune then you will have to tune using the pegs.

Tuning a cello using the pegs does take some practice and there is a risk that your string will break (if it us overtuned) and also that your bridge could fall down. If you aren't confident using the pegs, we recommend taking it to your teacher or Luthier and they can tune it for you and give you a lesson on how to tune with the pegs yourself.

If you find it incredibly difficult moving your pegs and keeping them in place, they may not have been cut correctly to begin with and will never function properly. In this instance you may need some new pegs fitted. If they are just very stiff, but tend to stay in place then they may just need a service or some peg paste.
