To understand the significance of the PD-26, we need to look back at its origins: the PD-35 engine.
The PD-35 was an ambitious high-bypass turbofan project, designed to power Russia’s long-range wide-body aircraft. With a thrust of up to 35 tons, this engine was considered Russia’s first engine of its kind in the modern era. This country's engineers invested heavily in developing the project’s core technologies, including a massive 3.1-meter-diameter fan and a highly efficient high-pressure turbine system. Specific fuel consumption was 2 to 5% lower than that of Western competitors, while noise levels were reduced by 17 to 20% and Nitrogen Oxides emissions by 50 to 60%, demonstrating that this engine was not only powerful but also highly efficient.
