Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki unveils ‘Nowitzki Way’ near American Airlines Center

For 21 years, Dirk Nowitzki made a name for himself at American Airlines Center. Now a street passing near his home court will bear the name of the Dallas Mavericks legend.

“This honor is a little bit bigger than basketball," he said Wednesday afternoon, getting emotional during the christening for Nowitzki Way. “This is about my relationship with this city, with this community.”

Mavericks fans, players and staff joined city officials at the event, which rehashed the German-born basketball star’s professional wins and his personal contributions to the city.
