Having a winged scapula not only looks unattractive, but it can be detrimental to your own shoulder health as well by causing issues like shoulder pain and instability. When you have shoulder blade winging, the scapula is popping out more in the back. You may see this when someone has their shirt off and you are just staring at their back, or they are raising their arms up and you are looking at their back.

A major cause of this outside of a nerve issue is the Serratus Anterior muscle being weak. This muscle is responsible for pressing the shoulder blade against the rib cage. So if this muscle isn't functioning properly, the shoulder blade can stick out in the back like a bird wing.

A major action of the Serratus Anterior muscle is to do shoulder protraction, or bring your shoulder blades forward. So you can do the push up plus exercise. To do this, get into a push up position with your elbows fully extended. Then, just move from your shoulder blades. Essentially, you are lowering yourself, then protracting, lowering yourself, and repeating that. If that is too hard, try doing it leaning against a wall or on your knees.

When this issue is addressed, it should not only help with fixing a winged scapula, but also issues like shoulder pain too. When your shoulder blades are more stable, you are less likely to get issues like impingement syndrome, for example.
