Brendan Mulvihill was born in Northampton, England in 1954, and emigrated to New York with his family in 1965. In the ‘70s, he traveled to Ireland playing throughout the country with his contemporaries and building a huge repertoire of tunes.At the age of seventeen, he moved back to England, where he stayed for years playing with the Birmingham Ceili Band. In the next few years, he won both the junior and senior All-Ireland fiddle championships as well as the Senior All-Ireland duet with Brooklyn-born accordionist and friend Billy McComiskey.In 1975, Mulvihill returned to New York and began playing with McComiskey and Co. Kerry immigrant Andy O’Brien, forming the trio The Irish Tradition. He was inducted into the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Mid-Atlantic Region Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Cork Folk Festival began in 1979 The main concerts took place at the Opera House, the Triskel Arts Centre, An Spailpín Fánach and the Oliver Plunkett. The Opera House on Sunday night hosted the Celebration concert, Folkfest@40. It featured a dazzling array of musicians and singers, including Iarla Ó Lionáird & Steve Cooney, Eliza Carthy, Zoë Conway, Donal Lunny & Mairtín O’ Connor, Nollaig Casey & Arty McGlynn, Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly and Caoimhe & Eimhear Flannery. This concert was a salute to everyone who ever played, helped or attended the folk fest and was recorded by Aniar TV to be broadcasted by TG4 in the New Year. There were two great concerts at the Triskel Christchurch, the legendary Andy Irvine on Friday and from Scotland, singer songwriter, Dougie MacLean on Saturday. The Festival had invited fiddle player and educator, Liz Doherty to be their first musician in residence at the folk festival. Liz was featured at many of the events over the weekend including a UCC FUAIM lecture, workshops, concerts and a special event, Liz Doherty in Conversation at the School of music.

There were a diverse range of concerts on each of the four nights of the festival in smaller venues,on Thursday with Greenshine at An Spailpín Fánach, Diviners at the Roundy and the Noel Brazil song competition at the Crane Lane. On Friday a traditional concert with Karan Casey, Niall Vallely, Niamh Dunne, Sean Óg Graham,Conal Ó Gráda and Máire Ní Ghráda at The Oliver Plunkett Bar. Later that evening at the Kino , celebration of the music of Sliabh Luachra with Eoin ‘Stan’ O’Sullivan, Bryan O’ Leary, Niamh Ní Charra, Matt Cranitch, Jackie Daly and guest Liz Doherty. This concert was dedicated to the memory of Timmy (The Brit) McCarthy who died around this time last year. Saturday opened with open-air food and folk events at Emmett Place and then classes at the School of Music and various other venues. That afternoon there was both the flute & whistle and concertina concerts and a song session with Jimmy Crowley. There was a special ‘Gals at Play’ concert featuring five women musicians and a new commission from Mary Greene and Edel Sullivan a song entitled, ‘Cork’. Saturday also featured Eliza Carthy, Siobhan Peoples, Blackie O Connell & Cyril O’ Donoghue, Dermot Byrne & Yvonne Casey at An Spailpín Fánach. Sunday morning, there was a concert with the Lee Valley String Band and Niall Toner, this concert was a tribute to the late Chris Twomey. The afternoon featured the fiddle, pipes and box concerts and Cork songs from John Spillane and Jimmy Crowley. The Opera House on Sunday night hosted the Celebration concert, Folkfest@40. The Cork Folk Festival is grant aided by,The Cork City Council,The Arts Council,Failte Ireland,Media Sponsors,RTE Supporting the Arts.
