It used to be that extractors were over the hob. That makes sense, we all know heat rises and hot steam and cooking fats go up into the extractor. However the last few years we've seen more and more hobs with built in extractors.

In this video Steve uses a humidistat to find out if an extractor built into a hob really can be as effective as an extractor mounted overhead.

We use our working display model Miele hob, a KMDA 7774 TwoInOne

Miele describe them as hob with integral countertop extractor
Neff describe them as Venting Hobs or Vented Hob
Bora describe them as cooktop extractors
and no doubt other manufacturers use other phrases so please comment if you've heard of other names used.
