The internet has spawned its first music industry success story in the guise of the ballad singing group FISHER.
The band, consisting of singer and lyricist KATHY FISHER and producer and keyboardist RON WASSERMAN, spent many years struggling in the music industry before success on MP3.com's charts of popular downloads resulted in their first record deal.
They enjoyed unparalleled success on the website, being downloaded nearly 3,000,000 times in the last twelve months. At one point they had a staggering 11 songs in MP3.com's Top 40.
Their music is - maybe slightly pretentiously - dubbed "artistic pop" by the band's members, but does have a unique style, with very sensual, moody sounds accompanying the strong lyrics of their ballads.
Although they began doing simple songs for the teenage show "Sweet Valley High", the project that launched them was the opportunity to do a song for the soundtrack of the film "Great Expectations", which starred Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke.
Their song "Breakable" never made it to the final cut of the movie, but the song remained on the soundtrack alongside such music heavies as TORI AMOS and IGGY POP.
And it is thought that it was a link from Amos' website which first kicked off the bands' internet success.
They had also signed a deal with the record company producing the soundtrack, preventing them from releasing any material for the 9 months after the album hit the shelves. Not normally good news for a band, in this case the anticipation of new material from their internet fans grew to a level that meant anything they released would be snapped up immediately.
When the band were able to finally release material, they were swamped by fans.
Because of their ever increasing fanbase, Fisher have performed at the Lillith Fair and have are now played on American - something the band members find unusual.
Their debut album is now due to be released in February 2001 on armclub.com/Interscope and the band look set to become the first Internet supergroup.
