Marimba is a pangolin who was rescued from wildlife trafficking. She has been in rehabilitation with IFAW's partner Wild is Life in Zimbabwe for 15 years with her caretaker, Matteo.

Pangolins are shy, solitary mammals covered head to toe in scales made from keratin—the same material as our fingernails. They have a unique ability to curl up into a ball as a form of defense.

Pangolins also have 40-centimeter-long tongues and incredibly sticky saliva, which they use to eat as many as 70 million ants and termites every year. This makes pangolins super important to their ecosystems, as they control insect numbers and prevent the destruction of forests.

But sadly, pangolins are seriously threatened by illegal trade. Sought out for their scales and other body parts, pangolins are taken from the wild in Asia and Africa and killed to supply illicit trafficking networks. That's why IFAW is working to protect them.
