Leopold Stokowski was a great 20th Century maestro as well as a noted arranger. Among his many orchestral transcriptions are about 40 arrangements of works by Bach. The most famous of these is his mighty orchestration of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ. However, at the other end of the scale, Stokowski made some very simple Bach arrangements just for strings.

Here is one of them, the opening "Siciliano" from the Sonata No. 4 for Violin and Harpsichord. It is played by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of José Serebrier, Stokowski's one-time Associate Conductor. He has recorded five CDs devoted to the great maestro's transcriptions, including works by Mussorgsky and Wagner, and the "Siciliano" heard here comes from an all-Bach compendium on 'Naxos' 8.572050.
