Nursing home care in Ireland is provided through a mix of public, voluntary and private provision. There is an estimated 29,600 residential care beds operational in Ireland at present. The breakdown is private (76%) and public (24%). These beds are a mix of long stay and short stay beds. Some 1,866 out of 7,180 public beds (26%) are short-stay, while the number of short stay beds in the private sector is approximately 1,800.
