The season starts in deep winter, when predators are in charge — coyotes, fox, and mountain lions on the hunt. As the snow melts, the first signs of spring appear with gobbling turkeys strutting to the hens. Soon after, new life arrives, with deer and elk showing up alongside their calves and fawns.
Through summer, you’ll see bucks and bulls in velvet, antlers growing, and winter coats shedding into slick summer fur. As fall approaches and nights cool, September rut activity begins, with elk bugling echoing through the hills. By late October, mule deer and whitetail bucks appear more frequently as their rut peaks.
As winter returns and snow pushes animals back down from higher elevations, mountain lions reappear, and the cycle begins again.
