"I am the city of knowledge, and 'Ali is its gate."
أنا مدينة العلم وعلى بابها
(Regarded as authentic-sahih- by medieval Sunni hadith scholar, al-Haakim in his work *Supplement to the Two Sahih Collections" (al-Mustadrak 'ala al-Sahihayn); but Ibn al-Jawzi considered it to be a lie (kadhib, kidhb) in his work "The Fabricated Hadith" (al-Mawdu'at); while Suyuti, relying on Ibn Hajar, said that it was good (hasan), which a grade given to hadith in between "authentic" and "fabricated." (See Mulla 'Ali al-Qari al-Hirawi, al-Asrar al-marfu'a fi akhbar al-mawdu'a, translated by Gibril Fouad Haddad, Encyclopedia of Hadith Forgeries, pp. 353-54.)

"Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave."
أطلبوا العلم من المهد إلى اللحد
(There is no known chain of transmission for this popular hadith. Nevertheless its meaning is sound, being synonymous with the sahih hadith, "Seeking knowledge is obligatory" (Ibn Majah).
