We have eight planets in our Solar System. From the Sun, we have Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. We split these planets up based on their location and type. The Asteroid Belt is the divider determining which planets are Inner and which are Outer.

Hi, I’m Mr. Weather. In this lesson, you’ll learn about Terrestrial and Jovian planets in our Solar System.

The Inner Planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Why? Well, these four planets fall between the Sun and the Asteroid Belt. They also have a lot in common. These planets are terrestrial.

What does terrestrial mean? Terrestrial indicates that the inner planets have solid, rocky surfaces. They have few moons.

Mercury is the fastest planet in our solar system! Why might it move so fast? You’ll learn more about that next time, but leave your thoughts in the comments.

Venus rotates backward in retrograde motion. This might have been caused by a massive collision with an object in space or tidal effects from the Sun. Otherwise, Venus is Earth’s sister planet because they’re about the same size and made of the same materials. Sedimentary rocks on Mars indicate that water used to be prominent on the Red Planet.

Beyond the Asteroid Belt, we have the Outer Planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

These planets are called Gas Giants or Jovian planets. Jovian just means that each of the outer planets are related to Jupiter. They are large, have no solid surfaces, and are made of gases. They have many moons, and each outer planet has a ring system!

Wait? What?

That’s right! You might be familiar with Saturn’s rings, but each Gas Giant has them! Saturn and Uranus have rings that reflect or back-scatter light, where we can see the rings using a telescope. Jupiter and Uranus have rings that forward-scatter light, meaning we’d have to be “behind” the planets to see them. Additionally, all outer planets are gaseous, but Saturn is the least dense, and if it were placed on a large enough body of water, Saturn would float!

Are you familiar with the Northern and Southern Lights? Well, Jovian planets have magnetic fields similar to Earth.

That means these planets also have Aurora! Pretty neat, right!?

Scientists continue to learn more about our solar system's planets and other celestial bodies. You can investigate the planets more by going to www.solarsystem.nasa.gov!
