Examples of Positive and Negative Reinforcement and Punishment: Operant Conditioning Explained

Positive reinforcement – add something to increase behavior – add something they like to continue behavior (adding yoga after lifting if athletes use good spotting technique)

Negative reinforcement – take something away to increase behavior (only doing 15 burpees instead of the 30 planned to reinforce having good main lifts)

Positive punishment – adding something to decrease behavior (adding sprints to decrease behavior of texting during a lift)

Negative punishment – take something away to decrease behavior (taking away yoga to decrease poor spotting habits)
