Elle opens the door before you even knock.
“Hi,” she says.
“Hi.”
“Wanna eat cookies and watch a film?”
You smirk. “That's what I’ve been trying to do. But nobody,” you pause to emphasize the fact that ‘nobody’ isn’t really nobody. “wants to.”
“Well, maybe he thinks you’ll force Nick to watch Donnie Darko like you did with us.” You follow Elle upstairs to her room.
“I just don’t want to…get involved in anything.”
Elle turns around and plops onto her bed, giving you a quizzical brow. “King of getting involved.”
“Ahhh,” you sit down next to her. “Let’s stop talking about our friends. What about yours? I met them, you know.”
“Yeah.” you both lay on your backs.
“They seem really kind.”
“They are,” Elle pulls on your hoodie.
“Well? Are they gonna replace us?”
She throws the hoodie string in your face and looks up at the ceiling, “As if anyone could replace your incredibly annoying, loud presence in my life.”
You both smile and let out small laughs. It’s nice to feel the warmth of her shoulder against yours again. Almost like things are going back to normal for once.
“Is it awful being at Truham without me?” Elle asks, quietly.
“It’s awful. But,” you gaze at her, her beautiful eyes, nose, the cute little barrettes in her hair, her immaculate style, the warmth of her smile. “I’m much better now. I just…don’t like being alone, you know?”
She nods. “That’s how I felt. My first term. I got scared,” she takes a deep breath, “But everything turned out okay.”
It’s a small phrase: “Everything turned out okay.” But it stretches a million miles when your best friend Elle says it. And for a moment, in this golden hour, everything. is. okay.
