An Illinois State Police Trooper responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-94 prior to 71st Street in Chicago. Upon arriving on scene, the Trooper located a crashed Chevy Impala disabled horizontally across the second and third travel lanes. The Trooper made contact with the female operator of the Impala and discovered she was injured, unable to free herself from the seatbelt, and could not exit from the driver’s side of the vehicle. The Trooper quickly cut her seatbelt with a pocket knife and proceeded to the passenger side to assist her in exiting as numerous vehicles blew past at speeds greater than reasonable. Before the Trooper could reach for the door handle, a speeding SUV traveling in the second travel lane failed to move over and struck the front end of the Impala, violently spinning it in a dangerous clockwise motion around the Trooper. Immediately after being struck, a second vehicle, also traveling at an unreasonable speed, failed to move over and careened into the right front end of the Impala as it spun into the fourth travel lane, missing the Trooper by only feet. Luckily, the Trooper only sustained minor injuries and lived to see another day.
The operator of the Impala was injured but remained conscious. Her status and nature of injuries sustained is currently unknown.
