Описание к видео Enabling pharmacists to practice to full scope and achieve medicine safety

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) national conference PSA23, is a high-quality pharmacist education conference that brings pharmacists together to learn, connect, and better prepare for their work.

Australian Health Journal spoke with National President, Dr Fei Sim who talked about the announcements made at opening of the conference yesterday. The opening was in the presence of the Hon Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Aged Care, and the Hon Emma McBride MP, Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health.

The key announcement was the release of the Professional Practice Standards (PPS). Under the new Standards, clinical activity undertaken by pharmacists falls into one or more of 17 standards that are built off the medicine management cycle. Applying the PPS to practice will require pharmacists to look at the clinical activities they undertake, and the minimum practice standards that apply to those activities.

The Standards have undergone a dramatic rebuild, making them more flexible to meet the diverse and contemporary needs of pharmacists practicing in different specialty areas and scopes. Mapping curriculum against competency and professional practice standards aims to ensure pharmacists, including recent graduates, are equipped to meet the demands of their field.

Dr Sim spoke to Australian Health Journal about the changing role of pharmacists in recent years. In the context of the recent announcements by the Department of Health and Aged Care, the National Scope of Practice Review will give opportunity for the pharmacist body to emphasise the need to work for pharmacists to work to the full scope of practice.

“Pharmacists play a crucial role in improving medicine safety and reducing medication misadventure. The pandemic accelerated and expanded the role of pharmacists in the immunisation space, highlighting the importance of their essential care in local communities.”, according to Dr Sim.

“Pharmacists have been responsive in meeting requirements and improving access to care, including building infrastructure and increasing workforce capacity, enabling them to deliver more in the primary care environment.”

Dr Sim spoke about impact of the profession stating, “Pharmacist interventions, such as medication management reviews and providing recommendations, can significantly improve medicine safety and potentially reduce hospitalisation by 50%.”

“Involving pharmacists in patient care and optimising medications can help prevent medication misadventures and subsequent hospitalisations, contributing to a more sustainable healthcare system.”
