In this video, we explore how the Earth is divided into 24 time zones, each representing a 15° span of longitude and corresponding to one hour of the planet’s rotation. Ships at sea operate on “Zone Time,” which is calculated based on the central meridian of the zone they are in. The 0° zone, stretching from 7.5°W to 7.5°E, follows Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). As ships journey eastward, they advance their clocks by one hour per time zone, and when heading west, they set their clocks back by one hour.

One of the most interesting navigational markers is the International Date Line, located around the 180° meridian. Crossing this line changes the date on board: ships heading east subtract one day, while those traveling west add one day to their calendars.

We also cover the essential tools used by mariners for navigation: the Magnetic compass and the Gyro compass. The Magnetic compass aligns with Earth’s magnetic field, giving sailors an accurate direction, while the Gyro compass maintains true north regardless of the ship’s movements. The Magnetic compass is usually installed on the “Monkey Island” above the bridge for easy reference.
