I Explored the TRNC: An Unrecognised Country Inside the EU

Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided into north and south, with the north being viewed as occupied territory by Turkey, known as the TRNC. I wanted to find out what the situation in Cyprus is like in 2024. So, I flew into the unrecognized country of the TRNC, where I rented a car to explore the island.

In this video, I will take you with me to the island's capital, Nicosia (Lefkoşa), the last divided capital city in Europe. Together, we will check out the border crossing and find out how easy it is to cross from the north to the south and vice versa.

I’ll show you the DMZ and travel to the infamous city of Famagusta, which used to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the 70s. While driving to our next destination, Kyrenia, I stumbled upon an abandoned housing development with hundreds of identical villas, all left to rot.

To fully understand the current situation in Cyprus, I will also dive into the complicated history of the island and present you a neutral picture through the eyes of a traveler.
