(24 Mar 2018) In a historic groundswell of youth activism, hundreds of thousands of teenagers and their supporters rallied across the U.S. against gun violence Saturday, vowing to transform fear and grief into a "vote-them-out" movement and tougher laws against weapons and ammo.
At Washington's "March for Our Lives" rally, throngs jammed Pennsylvania Avenue for blocks.
One of the faces of the 'Never Again' movement, Delaney Tarr, laid down the students' central demand, a ban on assault-type weapons, and declared "if there is no tightening of the background checks we will vote them out."
"If you listen real close, you can hear the people in power shaking," Parkland survivor David Hogg said to roars from the protesters packing Pennsylvania Avenue from the stage near the Capitol many blocks back toward the White House. "We're going to take this to every election, to every state and every city. We're going to make sure the best people get in our elections to run, not as politicians but as Americans.
"Because this," he said, pointing behind him to the Capitol dome, "this is not cutting it."
Mya Middleton, a student from Chicago, detailed the moment when gun violence affected her life. An armed robber pointed a gun at her face and said, "If you said anything I will find you."
"And yet I'm still saying something today," said Middleton.
The DC march was said to have drawn a crowd of over 1 million people to the nation's capital.
