Kingfisher chicks

At 23-days-old the kingfisher chicks are just days away from fledging the nest and have begun to develop individual characters. Their colourful feathers have also grown in and the bolder ones among them are identifiable.

Watching insect

But at this age everything is still so new to them. Watch as all sets of kingfisher eyes follow an insect around the nest!

Common kingfisher

This is a common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), a species widespread in Europe.

Secret underground world

Kingfishers normally lay their eggs in underground nests, dug into muddy river banks using their long beaks. I made an artificial alternative, as close a replica to the bird's original design except with cameras hidden inside, to be able to watch this family.
