Donald Trump’s foot is back on the neck of the Federal Reserve - this time with direct threats to fire a top figure at the central bank.

The US President has said he has sufficient cause to remove the Fed’s governor Lisa Cook.

It’s an unprecedented move, and one that would mark a sharp escalation in Trump’s ambition to lower interest rates.

Trump has long been a critic of the Fed’s hawkish stance, previously branding Chair Jerome Powell “terrible”, “stupid” and lambasting him the title “too late Powell”.
