RAF Bomb Stores. Collyweston ESA (Explosive Storage Area) near Stamford

This place was built for RAF Wittering which was the main V-Bombers nuclear strike base.
There were various munitions and H.E. (high explosive) bombs stored at this base.
1000lb H.E. bombs which were stored in the buildings closer to the entrance, along with their maintenance sheds.
68mm SNEB rockets would be stored in the slightly larger sheds one of them has a really cool eye painting on the door of.
BL755 Cluster bombs stored in the dutch barns didnt explore these much as there were loads and they all seemed to be the same and good job we didnt I just found out that these dutch barns are made with asbestos so be careful if you go here.
And a high explosive ordanance used by the USAF these were to be sent to RAF Lakenheath, which would be stored in the igloo bunkers back whe the site was in use.
these other munitions would be shipped up the road to be used by RAF witterings 49 sqd. using the Vickers vailent, the first of the V-Bombers.
Also shipped to wittering was the first british produced hydrogen bomb. this bomb Codename 'grapple y' had a 1 megaton design yeild, and a rather infamous past as during transport from Aldermaston, this bomb, which was pretty unstable, ended up in the ditch along the A1 on the way to RAF wittering.
During a blizzard on the 26th of feburary 1958 the truck had tried getting up a hill in wansford, but it had lost traction and skided of the road. Luckily the bomb was undamaged, as the yeild had been heavily underestimated.
When the bomb was detonated over christmas island on april 28th 1958 it had a 3 megaton yeild making it the most powerful nuclear bomb ever built by the british.
Although for the record there was no nuclear arms stored at Collyweston ESA. And this is not RAF Collyweston that was a radar site for RAF Wittering. Not much else to say other than hope you enjoy the show.
