The 12-Month Calendar we use today seems second nature, but it has a rich history rooted in ancient civilizations and continuous refinement. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to create a calendar based on lunar and solar cycles. Observing that the Nile's floods aligned with the appearance of Sirius, they devised a 12-month calendar to guide agricultural seasons. Each month had about 30 days, with five additional days at the year’s end.

Around the same time, the Babylonians developed their lunar-based calendar, dividing the year into 12 months corresponding to the moon’s phases. Their system laid a foundation for the 12-month cycle, adding an extra month occasionally to synchronize lunar and solar years.

The Roman calendar initially had only 10 months, with March as the year’s start. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, adding January and February and instituting leap years to better align with the solar cycle. This 12-month system, though imperfect, became widely used until Pope Gregory XIII refined it in 1582, creating the Gregorian calendar, which we use today.

The 12-month calendar is the product of millennia of adjustments, from the Egyptians and Babylonians to the Romans and beyond—a structure that continues to organize our lives.
