Life Cycle
Eggs: The adult flukes reside in the bile ducts of humans and other mammals, where they lay eggs that are excreted in feces.

Intermediate Hosts: The eggs hatch in freshwater, releasing miracidia that infect suitable snail species.

Development in Snails: Inside the snails, the miracidia undergo several developmental stages (sporocysts, rediae, and cercariae).

Infection of Fish: The cercariae leave the snails and infect freshwater fish, encysting as metacercariae in the fish's flesh.

Human Infection: Humans become infected by consuming undercooked, pickled, or salted freshwater fish containing the metacercariae.

Pathogenesis
Bile Duct Infection: Once ingested, the metacercariae excyst in the duodenum and migrate to the bile ducts, where they mature into adult flukes.

Chronic Inflammation: The presence of the worms in the bile ducts causes chronic inflammation, leading to fibrosis and damage to the liver tissue.
