Doing Media History: Some Reflections By Prof P Thirumal, Department of Communication, and Dean, Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication, University of Hyderabad

Abstract: My work on the cultural history of Mizoram foregrounds expressions rather than representations of the Zo society. In a circuitous manner, expressions are premised on the transformative potential of bodies, technologies and communities. Transformations are "becomings", and productive notions like intensity, vitality, aesthetics and poesies are deployed to interpret and engage with the process of becoming. This manner of doing cultural or media history shifts the focus towards addressing existence (human and non-human) and invokes ontology rather than epistemology.

P Thirumal is Professor, Department of Communication and Dean, Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts and Communication. He has written several influential articles on history and theory of media, enabling histories of technologies and communities, North East Studies and Discrimination Studies. He is the main author of the Routledge monograph, Modern Mizoram: History, Culture, Poetics (2019).
