In this lesson I break down the exercise I came up with when trying to figure out my finger drumming technique. S/o @CoinOpMilitia for hitting me up about this, hope this helps!

My layout is always the same, on SP-404 or MPC or whatever...I think that's really important to start off with. I always put my drums on the same pads so the technique is always the same.

[Pad 9] Hi Hat - 1st finger
[Pad 10] Kick (strong) - 2nd finger
[Pad 11] Kick (soft) - 3rd finger
[Pad 12] Snare - 4th finger

I would usually stack variations of those sounds on the pads above them. For example, an open hat on Pad 5 and a softer alt snare on Pad 8.

In this exercise we're building up towards being able to jam on your classic boom bap style groove. Once you get that down, you'll be able to start stretching out into more complex variations of drum patterns.

The thought process is this:
Kick (strong) & Snare are on the beat
Hat is playing constant 8th notes
Kick (soft) is sometimes playing the 16th notes "between the 8th notes"

What that means is, if the hats are playing all 8th notes, you squeeze the weak kick in the gap between them.
Another way of saying this would be, if we count rhythms like...
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
...then we dedicate the Soft Kick (3rd finger) to only play the "e" and the "a" while the other three fingers are "on the beat" or on the "&".
For this lesson I'm focused on being able to play that soft kick before a strong kick or snare, the "a".
