SUPER SEAWEED TO THE RESCUE! No, this seaweed hasn’t been genetically modified to fight off mutants–it’s just working to combat the plastic crisis, of course! One of the most dire issues our world today faces is the overproduction and overconsumption of plastic. With waste streams ill-equipped to handle the volume and varying types of plastic, as much as 23 million metric tonnes of plastic end up in our world’s waterways each year! Not only is this plastic choking marine life and ecosystems, but it’s also having devastating impacts on human health, communities, and economies.

Founded in 2014, Notpla is on a mission to eliminate single-use plastic packaging with their innovative seaweed-based product. Their seaweed packaging is entirely biodegradable, organic, and made from seaweed harvested for industrial use (no fishy habitat destruction here!) In this episode, Ciara and Pierre discuss the plastic crisis, Notpla’s incredible 2022 Earthshot Prize win, how their work is eliminating tens of millions of pieces of single-use plastic across Europe and the UK, their future ambitions to use their product to better our world.
