Was Doomsday Clock a necessary sequel or shameless cash grab?

Doomsday Clock was DC Comics' first official Watchmen sequel. The release schedule was hectic, the concept was epic, and it was promised that the DC Universe wouldn't be the same again. But how well did Geoff Johns and Gary Frank do? Was there a reason Doctor Manhattan hadn't faced Superman before?

With the Absolute Edition on the horizon, and the hype for the title having died down a bit, here is my full review of the 12-issue series, spoilers and all.
