Construcția cetății a început în 1310, pe locul unei mai vechi fortificații de pământ și lemn din secolul al XII-lea. Scopul construirii cetății era eminamente strategic, mai precis pentru apărarea sud-estului Transilvaniei de incursiunile tătarilor și otomanilor.

Cetatea a fost atestată pentru prima dată documentar în 1456, dar cel mai probabil cetatea de piatră datează din secolul al XIV-lea. Istoria clădirii este strâns legată de localitatea Făgăraș amintită în 1428. Cetatea din Făgăraș era cea mai mare din provincie, iar istoria regiunii s-a legat de această cetate care domina împrejurimile.
