These amazing Yellow tailed Black Cockatoos have been around and I've been trying to get some footage of them. They are very smart and saw me putting a Gopro on a log, they sat there chatting for a bit, and decided it was safe to go have a look.
These are truly beautiful animals and we owe it to them to do all we can to ensure their future. Logging, particularly old growth native forest happening around here, destroys their already far to rare breeding hollow trees, and food trees. The Red tails and other species are really rare.
'A 1994 study of nesting sites in Eucalyptus regnans forest in the Strzelecki Ranges in eastern Victoria found the average age of trees used for hollows by the yellow-tailed black cockatoo to be 228 years. The authors noted that the proposed 80–150 year rotation time for managed forests would impact on the numbers of suitable trees.'
