The Acela is officially the fastest train in all of North and South America, hitting up to 150mph on some parts of its route. For a lot of Americans, it’s a small taste of what high-speed rail could be in a country where we mostly rely on cars and planes to get around. And let’s be honest—many people here would love to have trains that can keep up with Japan’s bullet trains or the high-speed lines in Europe and China, just to feel proud and say, “Yeah, we’ve got that too.” But is the Acela the only high-speed option they have, or are there other trains out there ready to give Americans a faster, smoother way to travel? The Amtrak Northeast Regional, running between Washington, D.C., and Boston along the busy Northeast Corridor, is one of America’s fastest and most reliable intercity trains, reaching up to 125 mph with its Siemens ACS-64 electric locomotives, especially on the straight stretches near Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Rhode Island. Passengers enjoy clear views of the Potomac River and the monuments right after leaving Union Station, and quick glimpses of the Delaware River near Trenton, adding scenic moments to the ride.

Inside, the train offers spacious 2×2 seating with power outlets, a Quiet Car for peaceful travel, and a café car for snacks, while Business Class provides more room and complimentary drinks. With Amtrak’s Airo trains arriving in 2026, promising better lighting, larger tray tables, and 5G Wi-Fi, the Northeast Regional is set to get even more comfortable. While not a world-class bullet train, its reliable speeds and frequent service make it a strong A-Tier in America’s high-speed train landscape, a symbol of what rail travel can already offer in the U.S. while hinting at even better journeys ahead.
