A new study published in Science Advances reveals that ancient cicadas rapidly evolved their wing shape and flight speed to survive the rise of predatory birds during the Mesozoic era.

Researchers examined fossilized wings of over 80 cicada species and found that their wings became slimmer, wider, and more muscular over roughly 160 million years. This allowed them to fly up to 39% faster, likely an adaptation to escape birds who had evolved the ability to catch insects mid-flight.
