In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to apply both red and green patinas to your copper projects.

All you need to create a red patina is boiling water and a super heated piece of copper. Safety equipment like tongs and safety glasses are also required. Making a green patina is a little more involved. It requires: ammonia, course salt, sawdust (or a similar material), plastic bags and/or a a container with a tight sealing top, and a non-absorbant support.
