SFC Howard left the military as a Colonel, and one of the most decorated Soldiers in American history. He was also awarded 8 Purple Hearts, a Distinguished Service Cross, a SIlver Star, and four Bronze Stars, among many other awards. The man was wounded 14 times in 54 months, and he kept on going. If that's not the epitome of perseverance, we don't know what is.

COL Howard's service included time in the secretive MACV-SOG, Special Forces Soldiers who worked outside the typical borders during the Vietnam War, and that was only declassified in the '80s.

Most of us may never live up to COL Howard's service and sacrifice, but men like him can serve as a north star — a guiding force in our lives, encouraging us to be selfless, courageous, and fiercely idealistic and pragmatic at the same time.
