The developments have turned the spotlight on the 16th century mosque, which is now at the centre of a nationwide debate with communal, political, and legal ramifications.

Just about a kilometre from the houses of Naeem and Ayaan stands the Jama Masjid atop an elevated spot in Kot Purvi area of the city. It is right in the middle of a busy market place. The shops that were closed for three days following the November 24 violence are open again and the shoppers are back. However, policemen have been posted every few paces, and the tension is palpable. The narrow lane leading to the main gate of the white and green masjid is barricaded, and several policemen sit guarding the spot. A short uphill walk leads to the main entrance of the mosque, a permanent police post present by its side, a reminder of the only time in recent memory the city witnessed communal tension. In 1976, the mosque’s maulana was murdered by a Hindu, which led to riots and a month-long curfew.
