On the 1st of October 2018, in the early hours after the NRL grand final, 19-year-old Dean Webber was sleeping on the couch in the living room of his relative's home on Topton Street Alva Beach, Queensland. A woman named Candice Locke was seeking assistance for a shoulder injury after falling out of a Polaris (side-by-side) while attending a beach party not too far from Mr Webber's family property.

In the case files, Ms Locke's statements changed at least five times; the statements surrounded the circumstances throughout her injury and the stabbings that took place in the Webber home. As stated by Ms Locke, she had asked Louis Bengoa (owner of the Polaris) and Corey Christensen that she was going to get help and then walked towards the first house she could see. Ms Locke ran to the home where Mr Webber was sleeping at the time; she knocked on the door asking for help. Mr Webber let Ms Locke into the residence and started calling 000 (emergency number) for an Ambulance.

After a few minutes of being inside the house, she heard Mr Bengoa and Mr Christensen yelling loudly and angrily at the door, banging on the door and calling out her name. She said she was very scared, and Mr Webber turned off the lights and locked the door. She moved from the couch to sit on the kitchen floor with Mr Webber. She heard Mr Webber yell out to them to leave his property. She heard him call the police and advise that people were trying to break in. QLD Courts (2021)

Mr Bengoa being the only outside witness to the event, spoke to police, having made different statements himself (not discrediting the statements.) Mr Bengoa said that when they got to Mr Webber’s house, he walked around the corner to smoke and urinate, and he
heard Mr Davy yell out, “Come on, Jacinta, it’s time to go,” a few times. (Mr Bengoa incorrectly referred to Ms Locke as Jacinta.) Then he said he heard a male voice say, "Get out, private property.” He then heard a loud noise that sounded like a door breaking, and he walked back in that direction.

Ms Locke told police that she realised that “they” had gotten into the house. She couldn’t make out exactly who was inside. She saw shadows and shapes moving and pushing and shoving and shouting. She sat with her head between her knees on the floor most of the time. Ms Locke said that she thought the struggle occurred in the front part of the house, not far from the door. She said that it happened inside the house. QLD Courts (2021)

Mr Webber told police that a short time later, three people forced their way into the residence through a sliding door and began assaulting him. He said that the lights were off, and he could not identify who they were.

At 12.26am, Mr Webber made the first triple zero call. It was directed to the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). At about 12.31am (4 minutes and 27 seconds into that call), Mr Webber was heard saying: The call taker asked Mr Webber if he felt safe.
Mr Webber went on to say to the operator, “No, I’m not safe.”Whilst Mr Webber was on the phone to QAS, he told the call taker that the buggy departed and then returned. The call concluded shortly after, and Mr Webber was advised to contact 000 again if there was any change in circumstances. QLD Courts (2021)

At 12.51am, Mr Webber made a second telephone call to 000. That call was answered by Police Communications Centre at Beenleigh. That call lasted for 4 minutes and 47 seconds, and Mr Webber advised that persons were now attempting to gain entry to his house. Mr Webber was distressed and expressing concerns his safety and that of Ms Locke.

The operator at the Communications Centre had no clear reasons Senior Constable Luke Weiks, did not believe what he was told by Mr Webber. Mr Webber put Ms Locke on the phone to SC Weiks who told Ms Locke to stop lying when she tried to explain the circumstances to him and was pleading for help. QLD Courts (2021)

At 12.59pm, Mr Webber made a third 000 call that was directed to a Police Communications Centre. During that call, he informed the call taker that he had just stabbed “a bloke who broke into my house”. He said, “There’s three assailants, big blokes, males”. He said they broke into his house and he thinks he’s “killed him”. He said, “I’m scared …. The other guy’s going to kill me. I don’t want
to die.” QLD Courts (2021)

An inquest in 2020 revealed that Mr Webber armed himself with a knife inside his dark house and fatally stabbed the men when they rushed inside. Mr Webber was never charged over the deaths, with both police and a coroner finding he acted in self-defence.
