If you’re interested in the mysteries of Ancient Egypt, then you’ll have heard many wild and wonderful theories about the Sphinx, and many of you will have seen this unusual feature below the right ear.

It’s a favourite subject of YouTube Shorts, TikToks and Instagram Reels and many ideas have been put forward as to what this rectangular feature actually is – why it’s there and what its function was, some of which are crazier than others.

Some say it's a button - a mechanism - a lever that you press and it opens into a secret chamber inside the head. Some say it's a way to attach a beard, others believe it's a blocked robbers tunnel, whilst some say it could be related to a religious practice.

So what is it? In this video I take a closer look at a true mystery of the Great Sphinx.
