Umandawa is making a profound impact on revitalizing Delft Island in Northern Sri Lanka. The Most Venerable Siri Samanthabhadra Thero highlights the beauty and diversity of Sri Lanka’s landscapes, from its southernmost to northernmost points, with Delft Island standing out as a unique and historically significant location.
This visit underscores Umandawa’s strong commitment to supporting both the North and South of Sri Lanka, as well as the entire nation. Founded to provide a vital social, economic, and spiritual model, Umandawa plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the children of Sri Lanka.

On this journey, the Thero first visited Fort Hammenhiel, a 17th-century fort located on a small island between Kayts and Karaitivu, off the Jaffna Peninsula. Built by the Portuguese in 1618 using coral rock to guard the entrance to the Jaffna sea channel, it was originally named Fort Royal. The Dutch captured it in 1658 and renamed it Hammenhiel.

The Most Venerable Siri Samanthabhadra Thero arrived at Delft Island from Fort Hammenhiel with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy. Together with a dedicated team of Umandawa supporters, he visited the Delft Divisional Secretariat office to make significant donations to the community. This impactful event was made possible through the collaboration of the Divisional Secretary, the OIC of Police, local doctors, the school principal, the Father who is also the school's English teacher, and Mr. Rukshan from Canada, all partnering with Umandawa Global Buddhist Village.

In the first event, in line with Umandawa’s mission to support rural hospitals throughout Sri Lanka, two trolleys were donated to Delft Hospital.

The second event was truly impactful. Delft, a remote island with limited resources and few visitors, gains immensely from Umandawa’s biannual visits, which deliver essential aid to children, the elderly, and local hospitals. The Most Venerable Siri Samanthabhadra Thero invites thousands of viewers to experience Delft Island firsthand and support this deserving community.
Umandawa recently received several bicycles from generous devotees and decided to donate six of them to schoolchildren on Delft Island. Many of these students, despite their dedication to learning, lack basic resources that could affect their education. By providing these bicycles, we hope to enhance their educational journey and future success. The six students who received the bicycles expressed deep gratitude and will now use them for their daily school commute. This initiative has been strongly supported by the Navy Commander of Sri Lanka, the DIG of Northern Province, and the OIC of Police, with crucial organization by the Divisional Secretary.

The third donation was a key part of Umandawa’s effort to prevent drug addiction among children through sports. While we work on rehabilitating those affected by addiction and providing job training, we believe that involving children in sports is a crucial preventative step. To support this, Umandawa donated Rs. 200,000 worth of cricket equipment to Delft school, encouraging students to excel in both sports and academics. Thero urged the students to use the equipment wisely, train hard, and aim for the national cricket team.
He emphasized the unity of Sri Lankans from both the North and South in celebrating cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan and stressed that equality and a positive attitude are vital for national progress. Religious leaders, Thero added, play an essential role in fostering a friendly and unified nation.

In the fourth event, the Divisional Secretary gathered 100 students from Delft Island who are facing various challenges. Umandawa donated 100 packages of books to support their education. The school principal and the dedicated Father, who is also the English teacher, distributed the books, ensuring the students received the resources they need to succeed.

In the fifth and final event of the day, Umandawa distributed fruits to 650 children from Delft Island. The Most Venerable Siri Samanthabhadra Thero highlighted the crucial role of fruits in maintaining good health, particularly praising Murunga (Moringa) for its high protein content and its ability to combat malnutrition and prevent serious illnesses like cancer. Umandawa uses Murunga in daily meals to support nutrition.

To conclude the event, Thero encouraged the children to keep their surroundings clean and avoid littering, highlighting how a clean environment promotes well-being and fosters positive habits among the nation’s young children.
