But electricity doesn’t just happen, it takes a whole network of people and equipment to generate and deliver this essential resource. And some of these professionals live right in your neighborhood performing vital work to deliver safe, reliable electricity.


Founded way back in 1937 to bring electric service to rural farms and homes, Crow Wing Power is a member-owned cooperative that provides electricity to 38 thousand members throughout Cass, Crow Wing and Morrison Counties.

Over the years, Crow Wing Power has grown into a major employer that distributes economic growth and community development along with the power needed to help the area prosper. You see, as a cooperative, the profits from operations are returned to the members and fed right back into the community energizing the whole region.


There are electric utility jobs in every state and county in the U.S. If you haven’t considered a career in the power distribution field you should know that Minnesota utilities employ more than twelve thousand people.


Line workers and customer service personnel are the most visible employees in electric utilities but keeping your lights on requires a whole brigade of professionals.


Every utility employs a large crew of line workers who erect and maintain power lines, poles and transformers.

Apprentice line workers with at least 4 years of experience can take certification exams to move up the career ladder and become journeymen. Beyond that, there are positions for crew chiefs and Line management

You can get started in a career as a line worker after completing a technical training program.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College offers certificate and diploma programs to train line workers at its Wadena Campus. Depending on which program you choose, you can complete your training in just one or two years and be on your way to a rewarding career. You may even be eligible to apply for scholarships to help fund your studies.


As a high school student, it is important to start preparing now for your future career. Ask your school counselor about courses and other opportunities that will help you learn more about careers in the electric utility field.
