Why Do We Buy Gold at Diwali? ✨
Every year, millions of Indians eagerly await Diwali, the Festival of Lights — a time of joy, renewal, and prosperity. Yet behind the sparkle of diyas and the glow of gold lies a timeless question: Why do we actually buy gold on Diwali and Dhanteras?

In this video from ASA Hindu Wisdom, we uncover the spiritual, historical, and cultural reasons behind this cherished custom.

The five-day Diwali season begins with Dhanteras — from the Sanskrit words “Dhan” (wealth) and “Teras” (thirteenth day). On this day, people buy gold, silver, copper, or even simple steel utensils. But this ritual is not only about money or possessions — it is about inviting positive energy, protection, and prosperity into our homes.

Discover the two ancient legends that shaped this beautiful tradition:

🌕 The Legend of King Hima’s Son —
Astrologers foretold that the young prince would die of a serpent bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His devoted wife refused to surrender to fate. She lit dozens of diyas, placed her gold and silver ornaments at the doorway, and stayed awake all night telling stories and singing songs. When Lord Yama, the god of death, came disguised as a serpent, he was blinded by the brilliance of the metal and enchanted by her devotion. The serpent never struck — and the prince’s life was saved. From this story arose the belief that light and gold together protect life itself.

🌊 The Legend of Goddess Lakshmi and the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean) —
During the cosmic churning between Devas and Asuras, many treasures emerged from the ocean, and finally Goddess Lakshmi appeared seated on a lotus, holding a pot of gold and jewels. From that moment she became the Devi of wealth, fortune, and auspicious prosperity. Buying gold on Dhanteras is therefore seen as welcoming Lakshmi’s energy into our lives.

The Bhagavad Gita (Adhyay 9, Shlok 27) reminds us:
“Jo bhi tum khaate ho, jo bhi tum arpan karte ho, jo bhi tum daan dete ho — use mera hi samarpan samjho.”
Whatever we offer or give should be done in the spirit of surrender to the Divine.

Thus, buying gold at Diwali is not about greed; it is about honoring divine energy in material form, invoking Lakshmi’s grace, and committing to use our resources wisely — for family, society, and spiritual growth.

Even a simple utensil bought with faith becomes sacred. Each diya lit becomes a symbol of hope. When we light our homes, we also light our hearts — letting both material and spiritual wealth shine together.
