Mother and young son spend an afternoon at the playground learning and laughing. But then mom gets a phone call, and stops paying attention. Within a few seconds the terrible moment comes that can end a life and ruin many others - he's hit by a car.

The short film is the work of UVic student Connor Gaston. He entered it into the '180 Film Contest' an idea by ICBC to convince young people to slow down, never text behind the wheel, or drive while impaired.

The level of filmmaking from the 19-25 year olds eligible to enter the contest is remarkable, and three winners will be chosen to be part of ICBC safe-driving campaigns.

But do the short films actually stand any chance of actually changing behavior? We asked the experts - the people who are first on the scene of many accidents, who watch tragedy unfold right in front of them. Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O'Brien is impressed. "The videos will be effective" he says.
