Описание к видео Winter Road Trip from Reykjavík: A Day on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

This is one of my absolute favourite road trips from Reykjavík! ❤️🇮🇸🚙

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has some of the most epic mountain views within a day of driving from the capital 🏔️🤩

How much time do you need to explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula?
I highly recommend spending a weekend on the peninsula, so you have more time to experience the stunning sites at a relaxed pace 🧘‍♀️😌

I was just lucky to be able to squeeze this road trip when the weather forecast looked stunning on this beautiful Sunday 🌞

During wintertime, it’s also limited how much you can squeeze into your travel plans due to the shorter daylight hours. On this trip, in mid-November, I had around 6 hours of daylight, and driving to the peninsula from Reykjavik takes around two and a half hours 🌅

What to see on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula?
This was my itinerary for the day 👇

1️⃣ Berserkjahraun Viewpoint
“Berserker Lava” is an amazing ancient lava field, and this viewpoint is simply the perfect first stop when you choose to cross over the peninsula and start the day on the northern side.

2️⃣Selvallafoss Waterfall
This waterfall is completely hidden from the road but is only a 5-minute walk from the viewpoint over Berserkjahraun.

3️⃣Kolgrafarfjörður and the “Viking Sword Road”
The bridge over this fjord is famous due to its shape, which resembles a Viking sword when viewed from above. It’s a popular stop among drone photographers.

4️⃣Mt. Kirkjufell
The “Mountain Shaped Like An Arrowhead” from Game of Thrones. Kirkjufell is one of the most photographed mountains in all of Iceland. You can hike Mt. Kirkjufell during the summertime and in good conditions. Be very careful, though! The mountain is very steep, the surroundings can be slippery, and the nesting birds won’t make it easy for you to make it to the top of the mountain. I’d only recommend this hike for experienced hikers with zero fear of heights and excellent climbing skills.

5️⃣Erró artwork in Ólafsvík
This is relatively new! Erró is one of Iceland’s famous artists, known for his pop art. Erró was born in the small town of Ólafsvík, where you can now experience one of his artworks.

6️⃣Ingjaldshólskirkja Church
Apparently, this church has gotten so popular because it resembles one of the pictures used at the eye doctor when checking one's eyesight.
Apart from that, it’s simply stunning. Even more so during June and July when the lupines are in full bloom in this area.

7️⃣Hellissandur Murals
This small town has some very colourful murals. My favorite is the one of a sheep - it’s so realistic it almost looks like a photograph!

8️⃣Djúpalónssandur Black Sand Beach
Djúpalónssandur is one of many black sand beaches in Iceland. Apart from the black sand and beautiful pebbles, it’s also famous for the four stones that used ot be used by fishermen to test their strength, plus the remains of a tragic shipwreck.

9️⃣Malarrif Lighthouse
There are many lighthouses on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and Malarrif is one of the easiest accessible ones. You can hike between Malarrif and Djúpalónssandur. It’s a 6-kilometer trail.

If you have more time than I did, I recommend checking these stops out as well 👇

⭐The town of Stýkkishólmur
This town is my first choice for a place to stay on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Also, check out the restaurant Sjávarpakkhúsið on the harbour. They serve some of the best seafood in Iceland!

⭐Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall
Currently, they’re improving the trails around the waterfall, so I skipped it due to the temporary construction. However, the view of the mountain is spectacular from this waterfall.

⭐Svöðufoss Waterfall
This is another highly underrated waterfall on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It reminds me a bit of the famous Skógafoss in South Iceland.

⭐Svörtuloft Lighthouse
This orange lighthouse is one of the less accessible lighthouses on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It’s best to visit during the summertime, when the road conditions are best.

⭐The town of Arnarstapi
This is my second choice for a place to stay for the night. You can go for a very scenic walk along the ocean cliffs in this town. During the summer, you’ll see a lot of seagulls nesting there.

⭐Búðakirkja Church
This charming little black wooden church is a popular stop for visitors.

⭐Ytri Tunga Beach
This is one of the best places to spot seals on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You can get surprisingly close to them, which makes this place popular among wildlife photographers.

⭐Landbrotalaug Hot Spring
This hot spring is very rustic, but a fun experience.
I recommend a bigger car to drive there, the road is very bumpy and sometimes has potholes the size of swimming pools.

I hope you enjoy this video of my one-day road trip from Reykjavík to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and that you’ll have an amazing time exploring the peninsula yourself as well! ✌️😁
