Details:
The Unique Quartette was the first known African American vocal quartet to make recordings, these were done on wax cylinders.

The group was formed in 1886 by Joe Moore. The members were James Settle (1st Tenor), Joe Moore (2nd Tenor), Joe Cayson (1st Bass) and R.W. Marks (2nd Bass). According to Tim Brooks author of 'Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919' there were a total of 10 men who were part of the quartet over 10 years these were Joseph M. Moore, William H. Tucker, Samuel G. Baker, J. E. Carson, James Settles, Walter A. Dixon, Ben Hunn, Burt Lozier, Thomas Craig, and Frank DeLyons.

The Unique Quartette also featured the best African American performers on the circuit which included Charles Asbury known for his banjo playing. Joe Moore was replaced briefly in 1900 before the group would disband.

These selections contain some very interesting songs “I’se Gwine Back to Dixie” is notable for having a piano accompaniment. (unusual for the time). “Old Oaken Bucket” was a song usually performed by white quartets, such as the George Gaskin-led Manhassett Quartette but seemed to be integrated into the repertoire of the Unique Quartette's 1895-96 period and “Jubilee: Down on the Old Camp Ground” featured here is a different version to the one discussed in Tim Brook's book.
